        The Worst Year of My Life. 

      So this Act was slated to be called when at that year's end I wrote its prelude. Instead I see it now as the beginning of a clear break. Not a clean break—for what would transpire was the grubbiest thing with which I had yet had to deal, and in the short life of a mortal a break that takes 18 months can not be called clean.
